Comments: Thomas Hodgman is Thomas Hodgman (Oliver, Benjamin, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman's no. 63, p. 64. Ransom Hodgman is Thomas's son. Josephine Hodgman is Ransom's wife and Estelle and Mary are their daughters. Mary E. is also known as Ella per Bruce Hodgman.

Sarah Sproiol, aged 16, female, domestic, born in NY
Thomas M. Hodgman (Leonard, Amos, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas) is Fred Hodgman's no. 179, p. 180. Mary H. is Mary Hurlbut, Thomas M's wife. John L. is John Leonard Hodgman, Clarence E. is Clarence Edward Hodgman, Charles L. is Charles Lansing Hodgman, Mary J. is Mary Jennette Hodgman, and L. M. is is Thomas Morey Hodgman (Jr.); all are the children of Thomas M. and Mary H. Hodgman. I assume Sarah Sproiol is the family servant.

Henry Hodgeman, aged 25, male, Fireman to Engine, born in NY
Comments: I do not find Henry Hodgeman in Fred Hodgman. He lived in the boarding house of Hirum Hagdon with many other railroad employees. He may be the same as Henry D. Hodgeman in the U.S. Census for 1870 in Laramie, WY. Henry D. in 1870 was living with his wife Sarah aged 33, born in NY, and son William, aged 13. Henry D's occupation is listed as fireman on the U.P. Railroad, per Bruce Hodgman. If this is the case, where are Sarah and William in the 1860 census? Per Dave Hodgeman, his ancestor Henry D. Hodgeman was a railroad engineer in the American Civil War, which fits the age of Henry Hodgeman here.

Linda Chase, aged 23, female, born in NH

Josephine Chase, aged 18, female, born in MA, attended school within the previous year
Comments: Stelman Hodgeman is Stillman Hodgman (Stillman, Oliver, Benjamin, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman's no. 141, p. 142. His descendants spell his name Stilman. Eliza Hodgman is Eliza H. Searles, Stilman's first wife. Open questions: Are the Chase family boarders or relatives? Is Linda Chase a Hodgman or a Searles?

Joseph Hodgman, aged 41, male, Blacksmith, born in England
Comments: Joseph Hodgman is living in Buell's boarding house with a total of 36 people. There is no candidate for Joseph Hodgman in Fred Hodgman; Bruce Hodgman has no candidates, either. If he has any descendants living in the US, this could be another Hodgman line.

Comments: See D. Hodgeman, line 25. Bridget is shown with no surname or ditto marks so I suspect the attribution of the surname Hodgeman was made by the indexer.

Susan Hodgeman, aged 6, female, born in NY, attended school in the last year
Bridget, aged 28, female, servant, born in Ireland
Margaret Case, aged 21, female, servant, born in Ireland
Comments: I do not find D. Hodgeman or his family in Fred Hodgman. Bruce Hodgman also has no candidates yet. A person as prominent as D. Hodgeman should show up in other records such as a city directory. Could he be David Samuel Hodgman, son of Samuel Hodgman (Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman's mo. 39, p. 40? In the 1840 NY census David Hodgman was living in Fabius, Onondaga, NY and employed in manufactures and trades. In his household was one female aged 20-29 and one female aged 60-69. The younger female in 1840 could be Sarah Hodgeman, aged 38, here; she might have aged only 17 years or so from 1840 to 1860 (grin). Note that there is no David Hodgman in the NY census of 1860.

Martha Hodgeman, aged 22, female, born in NY
Martha Hodgeman, aged 5/12 (five months), female, born in NY
Mary Aldridge, aged 14, female, servant, born in NY, attended school in the last year
Comments: Abott Hodgeman is Abbott Hodgman (Benjamin, Benjamin, Benjamin, Benjamin, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 195, p. 196. The 1860 census implies Abbott was born about 1828; Fred Hodgman's gives his date of birth as 14 Nov 1831. Martha Hodgeman aged 22 is Martha Keen of New York City, Abbott's first wife. Martha Hodgeman aged 5/12 is their daughter.

Amos Hodgeman, aged 50, male, Day Laborer, personal estate of $100, born in NY
Lucy Hodgeman, aged 24, female, Domestic, born in NY
Alice Millard, aged 1, female, born in NY
Comments: Amos is the son of Samuel Hodgman (Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman's no. 39 (p.40). In the US census of 1840 Amos's surname is spelled Hodgman. I believe Lucy Hodgman is Amos' daughter as a female aged 0-4 was listed his household in the 1840 census. Amos Hodgman may be a widower as a woman 30-39 was listed in the 1840 census but no woman in that age range is listed in this census. I have no candidates for Alice Millard; neither does Bruce Hodgman. One research possibility is to search for other Millards in Onondaga County, NY in 1860.

Daniel Hodgman, aged 17, male, Farm Laborer, born in NY, attended school within the year
Lucy Hodgman, aged 10, female, born in NY, attended school within the year
Comments: Daniel (elder) is the son of Samuel Hodgman (Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman's no. 39 (p.40), Daniel Hodgman (Samuel, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas). Mary is his wife Mary Rotnour and Harriet, Daniel, and Lucy are their children as is Amison Hodgman, 1860 census, Roll 829, page 262(116), line 18, dwelling 850, family 857. Ref. Lydia A. Hodgman, aged 4, female, born in NY
Lillian Hodgman, aged 2, female, born in NY
Comments: Amison is the son of the Daniel (elder) of family 856 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY, Amison Jackson Hodgman (Daniel, Samuel, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas). Louisa is Louisa Walrath. William H., Lydia A., and Lillian are their children. Ref. Bruce Hodgman and private correspondence.

Elizabeth Hodgman, aged 13, female, born in Albion, NY, attended school in the last year
Cynthia Gilmore, aged 73, female, personal estate $50, born in Chester, VT
Comments: Bruce Hodgman identifies Eliza Hodgman as the widow of William Hodgman; William was born ca. 1800 in VT. Clinton, Catharine E., Robi, and Elizabeth are their children. Bruce Hodgman identifies Cynthia Gillmore as Cynthia Hodgman (Nathan, Joseph W., Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman p. 33, and the widow of Captain George Gilmore of Cambridge, NY. She died 13 August 1861. Eliza Hodgman and Cynthia Gillmore were sisters-in-law.

Cynthia I. Hodgman, aged 18, female, undeciperable occupation (see below), born in NY
George W. Hodgman, aged 16, male, Painter, born in NY, attended school in the last year
Comments: F. A. Hyman is Frasier Atwood Hodgman (Nathan, Joseph, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 84, p. 85. Mary Hyman is Mary Ham(m), Frasier's wife. William I., Kate C., Nathan F., Cynthia I., and George W. are their children. There are three families living in dwelling 1389, with 8, 7, and 4 members each. The census transcriber must have misread F. A. Hodgman's last name, making it Hyman. Mary and William I.'s last names were indicated with ditto marks. Kate C.'s name was copied as the first entry on page 305 and so the transcriber had another look at the surname, perhaps the next day, and spelled it correctly for Kate C. as Hodgman. Bruce Hodgman figured out that F. A. Hyman was Frasier Atwood Hodgman. I could not decipher Cynthia I. Hodgman's occupation; here is a tracing:

Mary H. Hodgman, aged 3, female, born in NY
Henry B. Hodgman, aged 7/12 (seven months), male, born in NY
Comments: John H. Hodgman is John H(enry?). Hodgman (Frasier Atwood, Nathan, Joseph, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), son of F. A. Hyman [sic.], page 304, line 38, dwelling 1389, family 2158 of Roll 846 above, per Bruce Hodgman. Mary E. Hodgman is his wife and Edward A., Syvander E., Emily F., Mary H., and Henry B. are their children.

Lydia W. Mosier, aged 37, female, Nurse, born in MA
Cornelia Mosier, aged 14, female, born in NY, at school in the last year
Comments: John B. Hodgman is John B. Hodgman (John, Thomas, Jonathan, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 159, p. 160. Only one child is listed in Fred Hodgman, John Edwards Hodgman, b. Saratoga Springs, NY 4 June 1853. Bruce Hodgman and I think that the census transcriber miscopied a 7 as a 1 for John Edwards's age as he attended school in the year and that would be unusual for a one-year-old. John B. is living in the same town as his father, John Hodgman no. 79, page 347(95) of the 1860 census. Both men are blacksmiths. Eliza P. Hodgman is Eliza Pulsipher Phinney. William H. and John Edwards are their children. I find no Mosier in Fred Hodgman. Neither Bruce Hodgman or I can identify Lydia W. Mosier or Cornelia Mosier. Lydia does not match Lydias in Fred Hodgman and he lists no Mosiers. Note that Frasier Atwood Hodgman's mother was Lydia Atwood.

John Hodgman, aged 4, male, born in NY
Charles P. Hodgman, aged 1, male, born in NY
Comments: John Hodgman is John Hodgman (Thomas, Jonathan, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 79, p. 80. Zilpha Hodgman is Zilpha Buel, his wife. Caroline Hodgman and Joseph H. Hodgman are their children, as is John B. Hodgman, listed in Saratoga Springs in this same census on page 321(69), line 4, dwelling 503, family 559. Margaret Hodgman is Joseph H. Hodgman's wife and John Hodgman aged 4 and Charles P. Hodgman are their children, per Bruce Hodgman. Fred Hodgman lists Caroline Hodgman as born in 1825, so she would be 35 in this census. Caroline was listed before Joseph, aged 29, when family members are listed in descending order of age after the head of the family. I believe the age in the census was transcribed incorrectly and Caroline was actually 35 in 1860.

Anna Hodgman, aged 39, female, born in NY
Hellen Jane, aged 28, female, Domestic, born in Ireland
Margaret Holon, aged 13, female, born in Ireland, attended school in the last year
Comments: Bruce Hodgman identifies Anna Hodgman, aged 69, as the widow of Isaac Hodgman (Amos, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 95, p. 96. Fred Hodgman lists Isaac's wife Anna as Anna Rundle. Bruce believes Isaac Hodgman married twice, his first wife Amanda having died in 1854. Isaac died in 1856. Anna Hodgman, aged 39, may be Isaac's daughter Hanna S. Hodgman born 1815. Per Fred Hodgman, Hannah S. Hodgman married Ebenezer Hunter, date unknown. Isaac had four daughters and no sons listed in Fred Hodgman. Fred Hodgman lists Isaac's daughter Amanda Hodgman as married in 1852 and died in 1854.

Comments: Leonard Hodgman is Leonard Hodgman (Amos, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 96, p. 97. James Hodgman is James Hodgman (Amos, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman p. 39. Leonard and James are brothers. Jennette Hodgman is Janette Morey per Fred Hodgman. Isac H. Hodgman is Isaac Henry Hodgman (Leonard, Amos, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman p. 97, son of Leonard and Janette. Neither Bruce Hodgman or I have any possiblities for Charles Rogers or Catherine and William Bates. Dwellings 498, 499, and 500 each list two families.

Comments: James H. Hodgman is James H. Hodgman (Leonard, Amos, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 178, p. 179, James Harvey Hodgman per Bruce Hodgman. He is the son of Leonard Hodgman on Roll 857, page 315(71), line 28 of the 1860 census. Mariah Z. Hodgman is Maria Jennison in Fred Hodgman. Frederick W. is their son. Perhaps the census taker was spelling Maria Z. Hodgman's name phonetically, as in Ma-rye-ah, rather than Ma-ree-ah.

Comments: W. S. Hodgman is Warren Stone Hodgman (Leonard, Amos, Samuel, Thomas, Josiah, Thomas), Fred Hodgman no. 180, p. 181. Jemima is Jennie C. Balcom from Fred Hodgman; Bruce Hodgman also has her name as Jane. They married 1 Feb 1860 in Painted Post, NY.
